Native Panasonic P2 support in Premiere Pro 3.1
I’ve got big, big news (and you heard it here first
)… Adobe is about to release version 3.1 of Premiere Pro that has full native support for the Panasonic P2 format. What does this mean? Unlike other solutions that take the P2 files and wrap them in a Quicktime or AVI wrapper to be able to read, play, edit and export, this new version of Premiere reads the files directly. No transcoding and no conversion of any kind. This should make the whole process of working with P2 files even quicker and easier than it already is! In fact, you don’t even have to copy the files to your hard drive. You can actually just pop the P2 cards into an available PCMCIA slot on your laptop (Apple MacBook Pro users can use an ExpressCard to PCMCIA adapter) and edit video right from the card. Cool! This would let you throw together a rough cut in the field without taking up any valuable drive space on your laptop. (Although realistically, I probably wouldn’t do it because I always want a backup of my files, but I think it’s cool to know that I could if I ever wanted to.) You can even mix the P2 footage on the timeline with other formats like HDV and Quicktime. And the best part? It exports back out to a full quality, fully native P2 file if that’s what you want. P2 workflow from end to end.
Even better, my buddy Dave Helmly (who works at Adobe) has already made a video showing you the full workflow of the P2 file format in this new version of Premiere Pro (version 3.1 not yet available for download at the time I’m writing this). To see this video just click of the image below:

Awesome bit of information, for those sitting on the fence that look at the package and wonder which new piece of hardware, think this could influence a Hardware buy for Panasonic or more a software purchase for the Full CS3 Suite.
Hey Andy - Love your site and the show. I watched and listened to several episodes today and really enjoyed them. Keep up the great work! BTW, I’ve now found out that Premiere 3.1 should be available to users worldwide sometime next week.
