Wilhelm Scream on ABC News

Last night ABC News ran a story on the famous Wilhelm scream that is used in so many movies. This pretty much takes the most inside joke in Hollywood (among audio editors) and “outs it” for the whole world to enjoy… which is actually kind of a bummer if you were part of the inside crowd that knew about it in the first place. A secret is NEVER as much fun when everyone knows about it. :-) If you missed it, here is where you can find the ABC News video clip.

In a nutshell, the Wilhelm scream is a scream that has been used in the movies since 1951. It’s been in every single one of the Star Wars films as well as the Indiana Jones series. And it’s been in about 130 other movies as well. It’s a lot of fun to listen for when you go to the movies as it is very distinctive, once you know what you’re listening for. ;-) For a complete history of the Wilhelm Scream, check out this video clip from the Masters of Horror series. (And no, there’s nothing gory in it. They’re just talking about the audio clip.)
