Blu-ray wins, Toshiba calls it quits on HD-DVD

Posted on: February 19, 2008

This morning Toshiba announced that they would no longer make, market or develop HD-DVD players and recorders. This is something I predicted back on Jan. 10 in my post Is HD DVD Dead? Blu-ray definitely advancing…

Models pose with Toshiba's new 'HD-XA1' HD DVD player in Tokyo in this Friday, March 31, 2006 file photo. Toshiba may pull the plug on its HD DVD next-generation video format, the Japanese electronics maker said Monday, Feb. 18,2008. Tokyo-based Toshiba Corp. said in a statement that no decision has been made, but acknowledged it had started a review of its HD DVD business strategy. The comment came after weekend Japanese media reports, including in Kyodo News, that the company is studying a possible withdrawal from HD DVD. (AP Photo/Katsumi Kasahara, File) The company has promised to continue product support for the ONE million people worldwide who bought into the format, but shipments of new machines will immediately be paired down and will stop completely by the end of March. This also means that HD-DVD movie availability will begin to dry up pretty quickly as well.

The final nail in the coffin of HD-DVD seemed to come from two announcements made last week. First, Netflix announced that they would stop carrying rentals of HD-DVD movies and then Wal-Mart said they would only sell Blu-ray DVD’s and players. Target and Blockbuster made similar announcements

So if you’ve got an HD-DVD player, get it on eBay quick, before the news gets out to everyone. :-)

UPDATE: Engadget has a great little post on what you can do with your HD-DVD player now.
