Will picketers stalk the Golden Globes’ red carpet?
With the Writers Guild vowing to picket NBC’s Jan. 13 broadcast of the Golden Globes from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association reportedly may opt to cancel the telecast in favor of a webcast or perhaps just make it a private event, to ensure pro-union stars show up to collect their trophies. Neither NBC nor Dick Clark Productions, which helms the telecast, would comment for this article, but a source said the network still had the awards show on its schedule. The New York Times

Warner Music abandons DRM in Amazon deal
Warner Music Group on Thursday announced it will sell music without digital rights management software through Amazon’s online music store. Warner follows EMI Group and Universal Music Group in their decision to join Amazon’s music store, which forbids selling digital songs with anti-copying restrictions, as the music industry continues to face steep declines in CD sales. Wal-Mart pulls plug on Web video download service
Wal-Mart Stores shuttered its online video download business on Dec. 21, less than a year after the venture was launched, due to a lower-than-expected demand for the service, according to this article. Actual DVDs still will be sold online and at Wal-Mart’s retail outlets, however. MSNBC/Reuters

Sony to stop making rear-projection TVs
Sony in late February will end production of its rear-projection TVs. The decision, which follows similar announcements from rivals Seiko Epson and Hitachi, had been expected, as RPTV sets have lost favor with consumers, now that the newer generation of flat-screen TVs has become more affordable. Commentary: NFL Network “humbled” by Pats-Giants concession
According to sports media columnist Richard Sandomir, the NFL Network’s deal to simulcast its coverage of Saturday’s football game between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants represents a “humbling detour” for the fledgling network. Sandomir suggests that the NFL may be muscled into offering cable companies equity stakes in the NFL Network in order to get the basic-tier carriage it seeks. The New York Times
